The training and dedication
of students in Sweetwater High’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve
Officers’ Training Corps program has been rewarded with one
of the nation’s highest honors for trainees.
The Marine Corps Reserve Officers Association named Sweetwater
High’s Marine Corps JROTC unit as the best in a Marine Corps
region that stretches from California to Hawaii and Japan. Sweetwater
High is one of only six such honorees in the nation.
Says Sweetwater District Superintendent Dr. Ed Brand, “We’re
proud that the hard work, leadership and discipline that these kids
demonstrate every day is being recognized outside the community
as well. These kids embrace the program’s goals of citizenship
and patriotism. And they are strong practitioners of community service.”
Col. Bob Jackson, Senior Marine Instructor at Sweetwater, said
he thought the school had a good shot at the Marine Corps award
because of its selection as a Naval Honors School, which recognizes
top JROTC programs in a one-day inspection.
Sweetwater’s Marine Corps JROTC also conducted more than
100 activities beyond the school day last year. With more than 180
students, the program has a strong following and a track record
of accomplishments. The curriculum includes physical training, drilling
and uniform inspection. The JROTC Color Guard is frequently in demand
at school and community events.
“It’s what you make of it and we’ve got a fine
group of students who put a lot into it,” Jackson said.
Sweetwater Board President Greg Sandoval said the program reflects
the district’s collaborative spirit and strong ties to the
military.
“We celebrate our partnerships and the JROTC program at Sweetwater
High is a great example of the benefits of educating students in
leadership,” Sandoval said. “These kids and their instructors
are to be congratulated.”
